At least MicroSoft Outlook 2000 is not able to use the SASL PLAIN Login MECH over a TLS connection to Postfix. You need to compile in the LOGIN MECH and state that in the the "apps" folder in smtpd.conf accordingly. After recompileing SASL, you will have to recompile Postfix, so that it can pick up the config change.
